Yoora Park

Untitled (background activity)

Work Description

For the screens in Düsseldorf subway stations, Yoora Park has developed a site-specific work that investigates perception as it operates on the level of subtle vibrations and preconscious processes. Untitled (background activity) considers vibration as a state that is immanent to all things: a continuous, soundless background activity that structures perception, even before it takes shape as sound or language.

The image contains pulsating butterfly antennae, which the artist views as an organ of preconscious perception. They stand for passing sensations beyond the level of everyday attention and comprehension. Park is interested in modes of perception that elude clear-cut physical or cognitive attributions, and in forms of knowledge that precede language and conscious decision-making.

The short videos are displayed on the information screens of subway platforms in intervals corresponding to the typical commuter waiting period.
