Gary Hill: Electronic Linguistics

When one thinks of writing and above all language in video art, one almost necessarily thinks of Gary Hill. The American video artists has since the mid-1970s produced video and installation art that grapples with the complexity of the relationship between electronic images and words. The apparent randomness of human vocabulary and the arbitrariness of linguistic sounds are repeatedly the focus of his interest. The result works are often highly minimalistic and always philosophical, where philosophy is, ironically, not spoken but demonstrated.
