The South Korean artist Sunjha Kim (b. 1983) translates the graphic form of the sibilant / ʃ / into poetic moving images. Shelly Silver (b. 1957) portrays in her intimate film essay her own neighborhood of Chinatown, New York, and in the process exposes the cultural subtext of the place in a mix of Mandarin, Cantonese, and English. Gabriele Horndasch (b. 1969) dances Chinese characters on an abandoned construction site, at least until a lack of communication forces her to stop the performance. The Serbian artist Katarina Zdjelar (b. 1979) gets people who cannot speak English to make a phonetic transcription of the pop song “Shout” by the British band Tears for Fears. Roland Schappert (b. 1965) has his mountain poem, a joke about mass tourism, read by a female avatar in front of an idyllic mountain scene.
