Narrating Video Archives: When love is wrong I don’t want to be right

The Video Studio at the Museum Folkwang existed from 1969 to 1994. Initiated and founded by the longstanding director of that institution, Paul Vogt, it offered artists the opportunity to produce and present videos. In the archive of the Museum Folkwang, there are numerous videos by artists as well as video material of documentary character from this period. The video program assembled as part of the cooperation “Videoarchive erzählen” concentrates on artistic works from the 1970s and 1980s. It begins with Gerd Belz, who greets viewers as a hypnotist and promises to liberate their artistic potential. It ends with Kain Karawahn and his urgent work This is an emergency / Notfall, in which he burns the running camera. In between Günther Uecker paints a room black and himself white. Franziska Megert intercuts positive images with negative ones, and in When love is wrong I don’t want to be right Michael Buthe presents Udo Kier as an Asian king.
