The media art agency 235 Media has, since its beginnings in the early 1980s, had a crucial influence on the development of the domains of video and media art. It did not take shape within the established art world but rather emerged from subcultures on the basis of media utopias and in close connection with the musical culture of those years. 235 Media was an important gathering place for many artists and both initiated production processes and developed curatorial concepts. For a long time, 235 Media was the only distributor of video art in Germany offering an alternative to the traditional art market. The essays in this book present the strategies of distribution, production, and education of that era in a systematic way and on a sound basis of art and media history for the first time.
