Ira Schneider: Video Art, Experimental and Comedy since 1969

Ira Schneider (*1939) will guide us through his immense, fifty-year-long video production. Right from the beginning, his recordings originated from the interplay of documentary, personal statement, and an individual camera setting. When video art came into being, Schneider played an active role in this new art movement. He exhibited in the first exhibitions, such as “TV as a Creative Medium” (in 1969 at the Howard Wise Gallery, New York), was involved in the publishing of the leading periodical Radical Software and edited the book “VIDEO ART An Anthology” in 1976 (co-editor Beryl Korot).

In 1993, Ira Schneider moved to Berlin where he still lives today. With his artistic experiments in media art he developed a unique position that continuously examines – often with a nice sense of humour – the human conditions of technology-based life. His works shift between documentary and poetic attitude and question the seeming opposites of realism and abstraction.
