Ira Schneider
The Ghost of Wittgenstein
As part of the DINAMO program Obscurity, IMAI is showing the early work The Ghost of Wittgenstein by artist Ira Schneider, who died in 2022, at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The experimental short film portrays the culture of the late 1960s in the USA in a mélange of linguistic philosophy and jazz. Ira Schneider was studying neuroscience at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, at the time and filmed the student sit-in protests against the Vietnam War with his 16mm camera. The omnipresent mood of social upheaval is masterfully depicted in snapshots of small everyday events that the artist observes among his circle of friends and on the street. An absurdly humorous dialogue takes up the concept of 'Sprachspiele' (language games) developed by philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, who sees language as embedded in practical activities or 'forms of life'. The dynamically edited film is accompanied by jazz music from Weather Report, Lee Morgan und Archie Shepp.
Two screenings are scheduled at the Rotterdam cinema KINO 3, on January 31, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. and on February 2, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.
