In memoriam Gérard Couty: Die FRIGO-Jahre

Boundary transgression and taboo violation are the themes of the art documentations made by Gérard Couty (1949–2017) in the 1980s. The artists Hermann Nitsch and Dieter Appelt divided the public with their provocative presentations and performances. The video documentations of Gérard Couty convey the atmosphere of this period but also that of a special place. This French media artist himself liked to work kin independent structures and in in 1978 was a cofounder of the FRIGO cultural laboratory in Lyons, a “lived utopia,” with work and event spaces and a residence program for artists. Many of the documented performances were held there. FRIGO, which existed until 1990, made a significant contribution to the evolution and establishment of video art in Europe. The eponymous artists’ collective operated a video gallery and edited the fourth issue of the international video art magazine Infermental (1985). This evening is dedicated to Gérard Couty, who died recently.
