Klaus vom Bruch: Memories of a Paper Streamer

Klaus vom Bruch (b. 1952) is regarded as a pioneer of German video and media art. With Ulrike Rosenbach and Marcel Odenbach, he cofounded Alternative Television (ATV); the three of them formed the core of a video scene in Cologne that was influential throughout Germany. From 1980 they appeared on television as a group of self-described video rebels.

Klaus vom Bruch’s are concerned with society’s relationship to media and to the past and the future. He stroboscopically juxtaposes his self-portraits with found footage from the history of film, advertisements, and news and combines them with hypnotic musical rhythms to make political statements. Since the 1990s he has held professorships in media art at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe, the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich, and at Columbia University in New York. Aus dem Leben einer Luftschlange / Memories of a Paper Streamer, 1952–2052 is the title of his artist’s autobiography, published in 2016.
