As part of the Narrating Video Archives project, the IMAI Foundation offers insight into its Narrating Video Archives collection. Narrating Video Archives is an initiative of the Videonale Bonn in cooperation with the Kunstmuseum Bonn; the Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst Aachen; the Museum Folkwang in Essen; and the IMAI Foundation.

One focus of the archive of the IMAI Foundation is on artists’ videos that—in a way distinct from commercial music video—address the synthesis of contemporary visual aesthetics and music. Such videos not only reflect the counterculture of the 1980s but are also an expression of an intermedia do-it-yourself practice in which video became increasingly popular as a medium of production and distribution. Inspired by innovative video technology as much as by contemporary music (punk, new wave, rap), artists experiment with the aesthetic of the audio visual.
